Decimal to Fraction Calculator
Convert any decimal number to its fraction equivalent. This calculator automatically simplifies fractions and can display results as mixed numbers for easier reading.
How to Use
- Enter any decimal number in the input field (positive or negative)
- Check the "Show as mixed number" option if you want improper fractions displayed as mixed numbers
- Click "Convert to Fraction" to see the results
- The calculator shows both the simplified fraction and, if applicable, the mixed number format
Understanding the Conversion
When you convert a decimal to a fraction, the calculator:
- Counts decimal places: Determines how many digits follow the decimal point
- Creates initial fraction: Uses the decimal digits as the numerator and a power of 10 as the denominator
- Simplifies the fraction: Finds the greatest common divisor (GCD) to reduce the fraction to its simplest form
- Converts to mixed number: If the numerator is larger than the denominator, expresses it as a whole number and proper fraction
Examples
- 0.5 converts to 1/2
- 0.75 converts to 3/4
- 2.5 converts to 5/2 or 2 1/2 (mixed number)
- 0.333 converts to 333/1000 (note: this is an approximation of 1/3)
- 1.25 converts to 5/4 or 1 1/4 (mixed number)
Important Notes
- Repeating decimals (like 0.333... for 1/3) cannot be perfectly represented with a finite decimal, so enter as many decimal places as needed for your precision requirements
- The calculator automatically simplifies all fractions to their lowest terms
- Negative decimals are supported and will produce negative fractions
- Very long decimals may result in large numerators and denominators before simplification
