Understanding the Conversion

When you convert a decimal to a fraction, the calculator:

• Counts decimal places: Determines how many digits follow the decimal point
• Creates initial fraction: Uses the decimal digits as the numerator and a power of 10 as the denominator
• Simplifies the fraction: Finds the greatest common divisor (GCD) to reduce the fraction to its simplest form
• Converts to mixed number: If the numerator is larger than the denominator, expresses it as a whole number and proper fraction

Examples

• 0.5 converts to 1/2
• 0.75 converts to 3/4
• 2.5 converts to 5/2 or 2 1/2 (mixed number)

Important Notes

• Repeating decimals (like 0.333... for 1/3) cannot be perfectly represented with a finite decimal, so enter as many decimal places as needed for your precision requirements
• The calculator automatically simplifies all fractions to their lowest terms
• Negative decimals are supported and will produce negative fractions
• Very long decimals may result in large numerators and denominators before simplification
