Understanding Percentage Decrease
Percentage decrease is a measure of how much a value has reduced relative to its original value. It is commonly used in finance, statistics, sales analysis, and many other fields to track changes over time.
Formula
The percentage decrease is calculated using the following formula:
Percentage Decrease = ((Initial Value - Final Value) / Initial Value) × 100
The absolute decrease is simply the difference between the initial and final values:
Absolute Decrease = Initial Value - Final Value
Examples
- Price Reduction: If a product's price drops from £100 to £75, the percentage decrease is 25%
- Weight Loss: If someone's weight goes from 80kg to 72kg, the percentage decrease is 10%
- Sales Decline: If monthly sales drop from 1000 units to 850 units, the percentage decrease is 15%
Important Notes
- If the final value is greater than the initial value, this represents a percentage increase, not a decrease
- The calculator works with any numerical values including decimals
- Percentage decrease cannot exceed 100% (when the final value reaches zero)
- Ensure the initial value is not zero to avoid division errors
